Porcelain Crowns For Smile Restoration

The goal of customizing restorative porcelain crowns is to not only ensure that the tooth is properly restored, but that it preserves as much of the healthy tooth structure as possible and looks completely natural when integrated into the smile. The dental team at South Knox Dental in Knoxville, Tennessee encourages new and current patients to ask us about porcelain crowns, one of our more popular restorative solutions available in our office.

What is a dental crown?

Our dental professionals describe the porcelain crown as a ceramic restoration that is fabricated and bonded onto the exposed area of a natural tooth. These restorations may also be used to replace missing teeth when bonded to false teeth to create dental bridges or when placed over the abutment of a dental implant. Crowns are incredibly versatile, and because they are made from porcelain, they are highly aesthetic.

Why might I need a dental crown?

Dental crowns, or “porcelain caps,” are commonly used in many situations, including:

  • The replacement of a single tooth or several teeth with dental implants or dental bridge
  • Protecting a tooth that has lost a lot of natural structure, such as teeth with large cavities
  • Offer protection of a weakened tooth that has undergone root canal therapy
  • To cover a tooth with permanent, dark staining that cannot be addressed with professional teeth whitening

What to expect in the creation of dental crowns

Dental crowns require two appointments to complete. During the first visit, our team will prepare the natural tooth by removing the surrounding tooth enamel. This eliminates the crown adding bulk when placed. Impressions, or “molds,” are made and sent to a ceramist at a dental laboratory with specific instructions from the dentist for shape, size, and color. Patients have a temporary crown placed until they can return to the office for their final restoration.
