Things To Know When Considering The Dental Implants Process In Knoxville, TN

You have probably heard about dental implants before, but when it comes to choosing implants as a dental option, you want to make sure you have the right information. At South Knox Dental, we understand that to make good dental choices; you need reliable information. Keep reading to learn about three things you should consider before getting dental implants.

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are a permanent solution for missing or decaying teeth. The implant is surgically inserted into the bone of the jaw. This allows patients to enjoy the feeling of permanent teeth without the hassle of removable dentures.

Bone Structure Is Important

Although dental implants are a great way for many people to save their smiles, this procedure is not for everyone. For the implant to work properly, there must be sufficient bone structure available within the jaw. Some people experience a shrinking of the jawbone as their teeth decay. You will need to be evaluated thoroughly to determine if your jawbones are strong enough for this procedure.

Smokers Proceed with Caution

Although our dental team wants to help each of our patients at South Knox Dental achieve the smile of their dreams, there are sometimes challenges to that. Smokers usually have a high risk of implant failure because mouth tissue is slower to heal after being exposed to cigarette chemicals.  In addition to this, the sucking motion made during smoking is also not conducive to the healing process. If you are a smoker, please discuss these concerns with the dental professional during your consultation.

Consider Your Overall Health

  • HIV, diabetes,
  • Immune diseases
  • Any other condition which would make healing difficult.

You should discuss these issues with your dentist during your consultation
