Tooth Extraction Dental in Knoxville Area

No one wants to lose a tooth, but situations arise where an extraction is the only viable option for some dental issues. If you have been considering a tooth extraction, you probably have questions concerning this procedure. At South Knox Dental in Knoxville, TN, we know that you need useful, credible information to make the best dental choices. Keep reading to learn more about tooth extraction.

What is Tooth Extraction?

Tooth extraction is the complete removal of a tooth. The two forms of extractions are called simple extraction and surgical extraction. A simple extraction is what comes to mind when we speak of a tooth being “pulled.” Surgical extraction is a more involved process, often used when a tooth is badly damaged or cracked.

Who Should Seek Out Tooth Extraction?

The goal of most dental work is to save a tooth. Many steps can be taken to save a tooth and correct problems. However, in some cases, saving a tooth is not a viable option and removing the tooth is the best way to preserve the health of the patient and the other teeth. Let’s look at a few instances where extraction is the necessary next step.

  • Severe decay – if a tooth becomes severely decayed or damaged beyond the point of being treated, it is imperative to remove the tooth. This is often necessary due to the pain the damaged tooth is causing. Even in situations where the tooth is not causing pain, though, a decaying tooth can compromise the health of your other teeth.
  • Overcrowding – If your teeth are overcrowded, it may be necessary to remove a tooth in order to make more room for your other teeth.
  • Damaged teeth – If one of your teeth is damaged because of an accident, you may find that having the tooth removed will be the best way to avoid future problems. A damaged tooth is often hazardous to the rest of your mouth and will, over time, develop other issues.
